The late Freddie Gilroy

Boxing legend Freddie Gilroy  has died at the age of  80. The Belfast bantamweight, a member of the St John Bosco club,  won a bronze medal  at  the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.
Gilroy knocked out Boris Stepanov of the USSR and beat the Italian Mario Sitro on his way to the semi-finals where he was controversially beaten by the eventaul champion Wolfgang Behrendt of German.
After turning pro,  Gilroy won British, Commonwealth and European titles and in 1960, lost on points to France's Alphonse Halimi in a world bantamweight title decider.
