Pyeongchang 2018: Bubba 22nd in half-pipe

Brendan ‘Bubba’ Newby, was just one place off qualifying for the half pipe skiing final after his  first run in Pyeongchang on Tuesday.
However a fall on his second run meant that he ended up 22nd from a field of 27 skiers; the top 12 making the final.
Newby was born in Cork while his father Van was a guest professor of economics at  UCC. Now aged 21, he grew grown up in Utah, USA.
Ireland has one more skier in action. Thomas Westgaard-Maloney will compete in the 50km mass start cross-country race on Saturday, February 24.

Pyeongchang 2018: Arbes 50th in slalom, McMillen 48th in Super -G

Tess Arbez and Patrick McMillan  were in action again today (Friday February 16) at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
Arbez followed up her 50th in he specialist giant slalom  with a 46th place finish in the slalom.
McMillan, 52nd in the downhill, came 48th in the super-G.

Alpine skiers  Tess Arbez and Patrick McMillan  finished 50th  and 52nd  in their disciplines at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

McMillan, who was born and brought up in Ireland,  was 52th in men's downhill skiing. His time of  1.49.98  put him nine seconds off the pace set by gold medal winner Aksel Lund Svindal.

In  women's giant slalom,  a strong second run saw  Arbez  move up six places to finish 50th in a field of 79.

Pyeongchang 2018: Westgaard 60th

Thomas Maloney Westgaard  finished 60th place in the men’s 15km plus 5km cross-country skiathlon at the Winter Olympics on Sunday February 11.
Making his debut at the Winter Olympics,  the Norway-based Westgaard,  who has a Galway-born mother, clocked a time of 1:32:34.2 to finishing 16 minutes behind the winner Simen Hegstad Krueger. Conditions were windy; "horrendous" in his own words.
Westgaard, whose preparations for the Winter Olympics were interrupted by illness,  is scheduled to take part in Tuesday’s individual sprint classic, Friday’s 15km Free and the 50km mass start classic on 24 February. But he may opt out.
